Greenpoint Roof

This design consists of a ground level garden and a second story patio. The ground level space is dedicated primarily to a deck and grass area. Ornamental grasses were planted in ground and in planters around the perimeter. Against the brick wall we used Miscanthus Gracillimus (mature height 5’) underplanted with Sedum T-Rex (maroon flowers in the fall). Along the glass wall we used low planters with Miscanthus Morning Light and Amsonia Hubrectii (white flowers in the spring and bright yellow fall color).

The upper patio is planted with a mix of trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials able to withstand the sunny dry conditions of its southern exposure. One grouping includes Betula ‘Jacquemontii’ (birch), Pinus thunbergii (japanese black pine), Euonymus Alatus (compact burning bush) and a native, purple-flowering Liatris perennial.

Another grouping uses the dramatic spiraling pink blooms of the Celosia Spicata ‘Amazon’ underplanted with light blue Schizachyrium Scoparium grass (shown here partially-dried in early fall). We also planted a white-flowering Wisteria Frutescens ‘Clara Mack’ to climb the trellis over the ductwork. In front of the building we planted another wisteria to grow up a steel trellis covering the façade.
