East Village Yard
We started from an empty construction site and designed a bluestone patio and garden for this East Village client. The view from inside the apartment was important, so we planted english ivy that will grow to cover the back wall for a lush green backdrop year-round. We designed around a cool palette, with special attention to winter interest. The juniper, cephalotaxus shrubs, silver dragon liriope, and dwarf mondo grasses will all hold their color through the winter. The ‘Winter King’ hawthorne tree has beautiful yellow fall color and red berries through the winter. The Rosa Rugosa shrubs (not flowering in these pictures) bloom with fragrant white blossoms in the summer, and will grow to 4 feet tall in the middle of the back bed. The dark green dwarf mondo grass will spread to cover the front area, providing a walkable transition from the client’s back porch to the patio area. Flowering clematis and honesuckle vines will climb to cover the fences. Spring-flowering bulbs, including anenomes and tulips, are interplanted throughout the garden, for early-spring blooms.
