Williamsburg Patio

This client wanted a minimal, modern design for his upper and lower patios. The dominant feature of the patios is the tall gray rear wall which is the view from inside the apartment. We used the ledge on this wall for a line of bamboo plantings, choosing Fargesia Denudata for its shade tolerance and graceful cascading form. The Pyrus Calleryana (Callery pear) tree on the bottom floor provides a vertical link between upper and lower floors. On the upper deck, we softened the perimeter with miscanthus gracillimus grasses, which have feathery plumes in the fall. Trellises full of Humulus lupulus ‘Aureus’ (golden hops vine) provide a colorful backdrop. A large Cedrus Atlantica Glauca Pendula (weeping blue atlas cedar)┬áis a year-round dramatic focal point.
