5 Tips to Choosing the Perfect House Plant!

By Sprout Home Brooklyn, January 15th, 2012, Brooklyn, Uncategorized

It’s cold outside, so why not create your own indoor oasis as  you bide  your time til spring? Here are five tips to help bring green to your living space:

1. Where do you want to start?

Is there a spot in your apartment calling out for a plant? Do you have some windows that need some life? The first step is to  survey the light in this spot. Figuring out the direction your light is coming from and the quality of the light is crucial to maintaining a happy plant. This information will help you narrow down the field of plants that will suit your space.

2. What is your aesthetic?

Do you like a broad leaf? Color? Spikes? Structure? Not sure? Distinguishing whether you are a clean modernist, a crafty creative, or a rustic classisist can aid you in your search.

3. Measurements, measurements….

Do you already have a pot you would like to fill? Do you need to buy both a plant and a pot for that perfect spot? It helps to measure your pot or the dimensions of the space before you set out for the store.

4. What is your lifestyle?

Does your job require you to be out of town most of the month? Or do you work from home? Considering the amount of care you can give to your plant  can also help.  Some plants are very low maintenance, while others require daily care. Be honest with yourself.

5. Pets and kids

Do you have them? Do they like play with or eat your plants? Depending on the location you’ve chosen, you should check the toxicity of the plants you want to buy. Some plants cause a light skin rash, while others can result in illness if ingested. The staff at Sprout Home are ready to assist you. If you are a pet owner, the ASPCA offers a comprehensive list of toxic plants.
