Bat Orchids

By Sprout Home Brooklyn, June 30th, 2011, Brooklyn

Here at Sprout, we’re accustomed to dealing with some fairly strange plants, but I’ve never seen anything quite like this Bat Orchid. This South American flower, also known as Coryanthes, grows on anthills in the wild. The petals are designed to lure in bees, trap them, and force them to walk through a tiny tunnel where they collect the flower’s pollen. Come by and check it out.
